Project

Dissertation: In her PhD project, Amelie Hofmann explores the question of what we owe tothe children of separated parents. She is supervised by Prof. Dr. Monika Betzler.

The dissertation project combines philosophical theories on the normativity of familyrelationships as well as empirical studies on families in divorce contexts. A parentalseparation is associated with changes in the relationships and living conditions of the familythat can disturb the normative structure of the family. In this context, empirical studies showthat the children affected often suffer from a loss of emotional security and continuity ofcare. The aim of the dissertation project therefore is to investigate ways to promote thewellbeing of children in divorce contexts and to determine who is responsible for this.

Ethics in Practice

The dissertation is written in cooperation with the Deutsches Jugendinsitut which providesimmediate insight into the actual situation of children in divorce contexts. As part of a 6-month internship, a qualitative interview study with children of separated parents wasconducted. The theoretical considerations about the normative relevance of divorcecontexts should be enriched by the empirical data.
