Paulus Kaufmann, Dr.

Paulus Kaufmann is Academic Director of the Centre for Ethics and Philosophy in Practice (CEPP) since October 2023 - as a parental leave replacement for Marius Baumann. He also works for the LMU Japan Centre and organises and moderates public philosophical events. His research interests include normative ethics, political philosophy and (East) Asian philosophy. He completed his doctorate at the University of Zurich in 2010 with a thesis on the prohibition of instrumentalisation. He then turned his attention to the history of Japanese philosophy and is currently finishing a book on the philosophy of the Buddhist thinker Kûkai (774-835). He is aiming to build a bridge between the philosophical discourses in East and West and, on the other hand, to make philosophy visible as a form of public action.
